The last day

The last day

Today was the last day I had to wear the cloth of our great nation. They cannot call me back without the Secretary of the Navy’s permission. I never have to muster again, I never have to get underway again, I never have to stand duty again, and I never have to salute someone ever again. Time to join the check of the month club.

After 23 years of faithful service before the mast, I had expectations for this day that had to be managed. I’m glad I learned how to do that during my time in the Navy; today wasn’t like what I’d been expecting.

That’s not a bad thing, I feel extraordinarily peaceful. I didn’t do a pimp walk on my way out, I didn’t give everyone the bird, I didn’t tell them all what I really thought of them, I didn’t cry, I didn’t get angry. There wasn’t much ado about today; it was a humble, unimpressive day.

One thing struck me oddly on the way home was when I began to reminisce how I’ve had to go back to work after seeing a shipmate going ashore for the last time. I didn’t have to do that today, but others did. There’s usually no fanfare or ballyhoo, you just go back to work. I didn’t have to do that today. I just said goodbye and left; it was time. I’m grateful for all my experiences and I’m glad I’m done. It’s time to move on.

So what’s in store next for me and the family? First, some time off. We’re going to take the next month to just relax, work on some projects, go camping, and enjoy life. At some point, I’ll have to get a new driver’s license and finish up a few medical appointments. I start my new job with JSL Technologies Incorporated on August 9th.

I know the family is happy to have me home full-time now. Adrianne asked if there was more visitation rights now and I said yes, you’ve been awarded full-custody. Sarah and Adrianne then attempted to scare the crap out of me and cash in on the life insurance before it runs out.

It took a few minutes for me to recover before I could say anything

The retirement roast is on the 24th of this month. I have to get ready for that. I need to make some gifts and coordinate some other surprises. I also need to write a speech. For the most part, Adrianne has everything under control for the party.

I’ll post more as things progress. I’m sure I’ll have all the feels before it’s finally over and even some afterwards. Stay tuned here for further updates.
