Sea stories are tales or yarns that sailors often tell or weave to one another to pass the time or overcome the tedium and apathy of everyday shipboard life.
They’re often rife with comedic material, occasional drinking, cursing, tales of foreign ports, unbelievable odds that are surmounted, and quite frequently relate a cautionary tale to others.
I’ve wanted to get some of my sea stories written down for a long time and have finally worked up the gumption to do so.
I’ve created a sea stories category for the blog so you’ll know when another great tale of heroism, hilarity, or sheer dumb luck is about to occur. My goal is to make these as fun as possible, even if I have to embellish a bit, after all, isn’t that what story-tellers do?
I hope you’ll enjoy my sea stories, they’re all rooted in truth of one kind or another. They either happened directly to me, I was witness to it occurring, or it was related to me by another seafarer.
These are definitely the good memories of my career and as much as I complained about things over the years, I wouldn’t trade these stories for anything. After all, “a bitchin’ sailor is a happy sailor.”1
Enjoy!
